Posted on: August 17th, 2009 I’m a Little Less Fat

David Claycomb

I report back to you a somewhat thinner man. I’m not skinny like my friend Jim the “recreational marathoner“, but then again everyone hates Jim anyway. Well I do at least.

He’s so freaking smug about everything. It’s always,…

Hey Dave, did I tell you I jog to work even though I live in a different county than my office?

or

Hey Dave, I sold my boat and now I just swim around the lake with a fishing rod in my mouth when I want to troll“.

The point of course, is that sometimes you can be TOO fit. I’m not there yet, but I must remain vigilant against it. I digress however. Read the rest of this entry »

Posted on: August 10th, 2009 Elk Season and a Milkshake

Corey Jacobsen

It’s all about finding motivation. The ultimate goal of training for a triathlon was to be in better shape for elk season. To be able to go farther and hunt harder. Part way into my training I realized that my diet was becoming more of a hindrance than a help, so I decided to take the ultimate plunge and eliminate ice cream completely…at least until after the triathlons.

Donnie, Dave Perry, and I braved the thunder, lightning, wind, and rain on Thursday night for the Y-Not-Tri Triathlon in downtown Boise. Conditions were completely opposite from last year where we faced 101 degree temps and a 6:30PM start time. This year, the intermediate/advanced group was moved to an 8:00PM start time and the temperature was hovering around 55 degrees. Fortunately the water was much warmer than the air and once we came out of the swim portion we were warmed up enough that the 55 degree air felt somewhat refreshing. Read the rest of this entry »

Posted on: August 4th, 2009 2 Triathlons in 2 Days

Corey Jacobsen

My wife, Jennifer, is to blame for this. Her motto is “Pain is weakness leaving the body”, which I’m sure is the main reason she likes triathlons. She was the motivation behind me doing my first triathlon, and now she has encouraged me to do 2 of them, back-to-back. The good news is that I am in better shape than I’ve ever been. The bad news is that the triathlons are 36 hours apart…the first is a small sprint triathlon in Boise on Thursday night…the second is a slightly bigger one in Emmett on Saturday morning. Training to get in shape for a upcoming elk hunt, or for that matter, any kind of mountain hunt can be a labor of love – or a love-hate relationship! As variety is the spice to life, interval training is the spice to your training program.  It will take your fitness to the next level and it may be just what it takes to get you up the mountain in short order and still be able to draw your bow and make a good shot on a once in a life time elk.  Read the rest of this entry »

Posted on: July 12th, 2009 My bathroom scale is the devil….and so is my son.

David Claycomb

If you’re bored enough to read this post, I can only assume you read my first one. If not, I’ll cut to the chase and tell you two important facts.

Fact #1–I’m kind of fat.

Fact #2–I drew an Idaho controlled hunt tag for elk.

Posted on: July 2nd, 2009 Please put down the flaming ball of sugar sir…

David Claycomb

Well,…… the draw results are out. I get both excited and nervous this time each year. If I DON’T draw, then I can continue muttering obscenities under my breath about how IDFG is clearly involved in a conspiracy against me. If I DO draw, then I have to avoid the aforementioned crazy talk AND I have to get serious about getting in shape. Neither of these sacrifices is an easy one for me. Read the rest of this entry »

Posted on: June 30th, 2009 8 Weeks Left – Are You Ready?

Corey Jacobsen

The Idaho draw results are available online today. We struck out, which means we are going to have to kick our work-outs into a higher gear so we can go a little deeper in search of public-land, general-season elk this fall. Donnie and I have been working out on a pretty regular schedule of lifting, biking, and running, but I have to admit…it can get a little too “routine”. In order to break the monotony, we’ve decided to do the Emmett triathlon in 5 weeks, which means we’ve got some work to do! As a little warm-up, we’re also going to do the Y Not Tri in Boise 2 days before the Emmett Tri…

I thought I might try to break-down our weekly routine, as well as encourage anyone who might need a little encouragement to start getting ready for elk season now (which is the reason we work out in the first place)!
