Posted on: June 30th, 2009 8 Weeks Left – Are You Ready?

Corey Jacobsen

The Idaho draw results are available online today. We struck out, which means we are going to have to kick our work-outs into a higher gear so we can go a little deeper in search of public-land, general-season elk this fall. Donnie and I have been working out on a pretty regular schedule of lifting, biking, and running, but I have to admit…it can get a little too “routine”. In order to break the monotony, we’ve decided to do the Emmett triathlon in 5 weeks, which means we’ve got some work to do! As a little warm-up, we’re also going to do the Y Not Tri in Boise 2 days before the Emmett Tri…

I thought I might try to break-down our weekly routine, as well as encourage anyone who might need a little encouragement to start getting ready for elk season now (which is the reason we work out in the first place)!

Success. It’s something everyone desires to some degree at some time in their life. The very definition of success can vary greatly from one person to the next, however. For one elk hunter, success might simply mean seeing or hearing an elk at some point during their hunt. For another, a hunt might not be deemed a success without harvesting a 400″ bull. That’s what makes hunting special.

Posted on: June 22nd, 2009 Donnie’s First Strike…Opening Weekend Elk

Donnie Drake

With Corey’s opening morning success out of the way, we found ourselves in a different location two days later looking for a bull for me to harvest. We hiked 3 miles into a basin where we had located two nice bulls previously, but found nothing that morning. We hiked back to the logging road we had parked the truck on and bugled down the edge of a wide canyon. Corey’s bugle was answered from the opposite rim of the canyon, nearly ¾ of a mile away.

Posted on: June 22nd, 2009 Corey’s 2008 Opening Morning Idaho Elk

Donnie Drake

Opening morning of our 2008 Idaho hunt found me flustered and panicked not to forget anything, although I had already double and triple checked to make sure I had everything ready when we started up the trail at 5:30AM. We had walked 1/2 mile up the trail and I just had that feeling like I was forgetting something. Sure enough, after a quick mental inventory of my gear, I realized that I had left my bugle tube on the back of the truck. Some help I’m going to be! I stopped Corey and told him. He was okay with that and said that he’d do the calling (makes me wonder if he didn’t just hide it before we left so I wouldn’t be scaring the elk off!).

I couldn’t think of a better first post for our new website! 2008 was definitely an elk hunting year to remember!!!

With our Idaho elk tags filled, our focus quickly turned to packing for our Arizona archery elk hunt. Joining Donnie and I on the drive would be good friend David Burdette. With gear and supplies loaded into the truck, we were all set for the 16 hour drive into elk country. We arrived in Arizona and quickly got camp set up in a central location, then headed out to see if we could locate some elk before dark. With only 30 minutes of daylight left, we spotted three nice branch antlered bulls and enjoyed the familiar sounds of bugling elk.
